We've leveraged our industry partnerships to modernize the blood bank's IT infrastructure without hurting their budget.
A Community Lifeline
Since opening more than 40 years ago, the San Diego Blood Bank has become a major blood supplier throughout Southern California. The organization processes about 10,000 units of blood per month - all from volunteers.The nonprofit’s team of more than 100 employees also works remotely across the region, providing blood collection and other blood banking services for hospitals.
When we first met with the blood bank in 2014, antiquated infrastructure and half-finished IT projects hurt employee productivity and swelled the technology budget. Roughly half of their 400 computers still ran Windows XP, first released more than 10 years prior. Their server and network equipment ranged from seven to 10 years old.That aging fleet became our biggest priority.
First, we leveraged our relationship with Cisco and convinced the company to contribute nearly $500,000 toward the cost of an infrastructure overhaul for such an important nonprofit. We also negotiated with Cox Communications to install high-speed fiber internet at every SDBB location at roughly the cost of their existing, slower network.centrexIT replaced more than 200 desktop computers and modernized the server and network infrastructure at the San Diego Blood Bank within a year. Since then, we’ve helped them move or open three offices without any technical headaches. IT has helped the blood bank expand in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas, rather than hindering growth.
